The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering to begin in the 2010/11 academic year. The department was established in 1999 and offers an ABET accredited Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering degree and a recently established PhD degree.  There are currently 7 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 260 undergraduates, and 12 graduate students in the department. The department currently teaches and emphasizes research in biomaterials/tissue engineering, biomechanics, and physiological measurement. 

Michigan Technological University is one of the four major research universities in the state and the only one in the Upper Peninsula. It is located in Houghton, Michigan, which offers a small-town environment with outstanding four-season recreational opportunities. 

Candidates at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor are invited to apply. Candidates should have a PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field, an established record of excellence in biomedical engineering research, education, service, and leadership. 

Interested applicants should send application materials as a single PDF document to biomed@mtu.edu.  The PDF should contain a cover letter, curriculum vitae (4 page maximum), and the names and contact information of five evaluators who have agreed to write letters of reference.  The PDF document should also include a 1 page statement on the applicant’s vision for the future of research and education in biomedical engineering, a 1 page preliminary vision for the Department of Biomedical Engineering at MTU, and a 1 page statement on the applicant’s leadership experience and philosophy.
